{"id":67,"date":"2022-12-17T04:16:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-17T04:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/linuxlore.com\/?p=67"},"modified":"2024-07-31T13:31:26","modified_gmt":"2024-07-31T18:31:26","slug":"who-uses-linux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/linuxlore.com\/index.php\/2022\/12\/17\/who-uses-linux\/","title":{"rendered":"Who Uses Linux?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Most people don\u2019t use Linux on their personal computers.&nbsp; I would say that most businesses don\u2019t use Linux, either.&nbsp; Windows by far has the greatest share of users, followed by Apple.&nbsp; And yet, Linux is used by many corporations, universities, and governmental agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Linux is used by CERN and NASA, for example; the US Department of Defense, the US Navy, Whitehouse.gov, the New York Stock Exchange, the FAA, and the US Post Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Some of the larger corporations using Linux are Google, IBM, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, and Wikipedia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Although using Linux can save a lot of money, many of these organizations are large enough that the cost of operating systems wouldn\u2019t have much impact.&nbsp; Certainly it\u2019s nice to save some money \u2013 millions, in some cases \u2013 but more important is that the software is reliable and unencumbered.&nbsp; Linux systems are reliable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I\u2019m guessing that the freedom from encumbrances is probably one of the more important benefits that these organizations consider.&nbsp; They can pretty much use Linux and its associated software in any way they like, including modifying it to suit their needs.&nbsp; If there is a bug, they don\u2019t have to wait until some company feels like fixing it.&nbsp; They can do it themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Linux is now used by all of the <a href=\"https:\/\/itsfoss.com\/linux-runs-top-supercomputers\/\">top 500 supercomputers<\/a>.&nbsp; Supercomputers are highly specialized hardware that require their operating system to be optimized.&nbsp; A proprietary operating system would be difficult to optimize, as well as expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Linux is used by about <a href=\"https:\/\/w3techs.com\/technologies\/details\/os-linux\">38% of websites<\/a>.&nbsp; Somewhat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/869211\/worldwide-software-development-operating-system\/\">less than half (47%)<\/a> of software developers use Linux.&nbsp; Smartphones that use <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Android_(operating_system)\">Android<\/a> are running a modified version of Linux.&nbsp; It\u2019s everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Despite this, Linux isn\u2019t used much by desktop or laptop computers.&nbsp; Windows still reins supreme, with Apple a distant second place.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most people don\u2019t use Linux on their personal computers.&nbsp; I would say that most businesses don\u2019t use Linux, either.&nbsp; Windows by far has the greatest share of users, followed by Apple.&nbsp; And yet, Linux is used by many corporations, universities, &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/linuxlore.com\/index.php\/2022\/12\/17\/who-uses-linux\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-67","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/linuxlore.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/67","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/linuxlore.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/linuxlore.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/linuxlore.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/linuxlore.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=67"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/linuxlore.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/67\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":162,"href":"https:\/\/linuxlore.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/67\/revisions\/162"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/linuxlore.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=67"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/linuxlore.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=67"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/linuxlore.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=67"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
